Los Angeles, CA – At least one person was injured in a collision involving a Metro bus in the Lake View Terrace neighbourhood of Los Angeles on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Shortly before 3:00 p.m. December 31, authorities received reports of a crash involving a pedestrian in the 12200 block of W Van Nuys Boulevard.
According to Metro officials, Metro Bus Line 233 was traveling eastbound when it experienced a mechanical failure and rolled forward at the W Van Nuys Boulevard intersection. The bus struck a pole and a tree, before coming to a stop against a residential building.
The tree hit by the bus fell on a pedestrian who was in the area.
The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the scene and attended to two parties. A 73-year-old man was taken to a hospital in stable condition while a 35-year-old man declined medical transport.
It’s unclear whether the hospitalized party was a pedestrian or the bus driver. There were no passengers aboard the bus at the time of the accident.
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power also responded to the scene to fix the downed pole and wires.
Authorities are investigating the incident.
Los Angeles County has historically experienced significant traffic safety challenges, although recent data indicates some improvements in its California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) rankings and a decrease in total victims killed and injured from peak years. The county consistently ranks as one of the most dangerous in the state for traffic collisions, leading in both population and accident volume. In 2022, there were 8,944 victims killed and injured in total fatal and injury collisions, which gave the county an OTS ranking of 14 out of 15 comparable entities, indicating improvement from previous years, where it ranked 1/15 (worst) in 2018 and 2019. Â Despite overall improvements in rankings, specific collision types remain a concern. In 2022, there were 1,524 pedestrian victims killed and injured, and 475 bicyclist victims killed and injured. Pedestrians, in particular, account for a disproportionately high number of traffic deaths in the region, a trend that has persisted in recent years. Alcohol-involved collisions also contributed significantly to the 2022 statistics, with 1,676 victims killed and injured.
