The driver of the involved vehicle remained at the scene and was not suspected to have been impaired, according to the police.

Los Angeles County consistently records a high volume of traffic collisions and the state’s highest traffic fatality rate, leading to a public safety crisis. In recent years, traffic deaths have generally been on an upward trend, with over 1,000 fatalities occurring countywide in a single year (e.g., 1,059 deaths in 2022).  Despite the county’s “Vision Zero” initiative, which aims to eliminate traffic fatalities, the city of Los Angeles alone saw 336 deaths in 2023, the highest total in over 20 years, and was on pace for over 300 deaths again in 2024. A particularly troubling aspect of these statistics is the high risk for vulnerable road users; in the city of LA in 2023, 179 of the 336 fatalities were pedestrians, who, along with bicyclists, comprise the majority of victims. Unsafe speed, impaired driving, and hit-and-run incidents are among the primary collision factors. The evening rush hours (3 PM to 9 PM) are identified as a particularly dangerous period for crashes.
