Stockton, California, has faced significant challenges with traffic safety, consistently showing high rates of collisions and fatalities, especially concerning vulnerable road users like pedestrians and bicyclists. In 2022, the city experienced 2,096 total fatalities and injuries from traffic accidents, with speed and driving under the influence identified as primary contributing factors.  Recent data indicates fluctuating trends in fatalities. For instance, in late 2024, the city’s traffic deaths were running 43% higher than the previous year at that same time, with 30 fatalities reported, surpassing the full-year tallies of the two prior years. However, an early 2025 report indicated a decrease in the number of deaths compared to the same period the year before, which the Stockton Police Department attributed to increased enforcement and safety initiatives targeting speeding and distracted driving.  Historically, Stockton has ranked poorly when compared to other cities of similar size, particularly regarding accidents involving pedestrians and bicyclists, where it ranked first in the number of cases involving those 14 years or younger in 2015. High-traffic volume areas and major intersections, particularly during rush hour, are noted as high-risk locations for crashes.
