Los Angeles County experiences a significant volume of motorcycle crashes annually, with over 2,500 accidents reported each year, many resulting in catastrophic injuries or deaths. Los Angeles has a higher rate of motorcycle accidents than the California state average, largely due to its high traffic volume and congestion. Data from the University of California, Berkeley, indicates an average of over 1,200 motorcycle fatalities and injuries in the city of Los Angeles alone over recent years, accounting for about one-third of all motorcycle incidents in the county. Motorcyclists face a disproportionately high risk, with fatality rates per vehicle mile traveled being nearly 28 times higher than those for passenger car occupants. In Los Angeles, statistics show that 51% of motorcycle accidents result in some form of injury. Common contributing factors to these incidents include speeding (a primary factor in 29% of LA crashes), alcohol impairment (26% of those killed in California crashes in 2023 were impaired), and other drivers failing to notice motorcyclists, particularly at intersections. A significant number of riders involved in fatal accidents were found to be unlicensed (36% in 2021) or not wearing DOT-compliant helmets.
