Lindsay, CA.- One person was killed and two others were hurt in a big rig collision with a vehicle at a Lindsay intersection on Monday night.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the wreck happened at Highway 137 and Road 196 just before 8:30 p.m. December 8.
A semi-truck hauling corrosive material was reportedly heading east on Highway 137 when it collided with a white sedan traveling southbound on Road 196. The impact sent the semi-truck off the roadway and it slammed into a tree.
The rig then overturned and spilled the corrosive material it was transporting.
One party in the sedan was killed in the accident. The victim’s identity was not released.
The operator of the big rig was hospitalized with major injuries while a juvenile riding in the sedan was transported in unknown condition.
The spilled material caused a HAZMAT situation that led to the closure of Highway 137 between Highways 65 and Highway 99.
The cause of the accident is under investigation by the CHP.
Lindsay records a relatively low number of collisions due to its small population size and low traffic compared to larger cities within Tulare County. Being an agricultural city, accidents involving big rigs and farm equipments may sometimes occur. The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) records show that there were 2911 victims injured or killed in accidents in Tulare County in 2022. Almost 16% of the accidents were attributed to drivers traveling at a high rate of speed. Further action is necessary, from enhancing driver awareness to upgrading road infrastructure both in urban and rural areas of the county to reduce accidents.
