Richmond, CA. – 29-year-old Alejandro Cruzrenderos from Petaluma died in a fiery wrong-way crash that happened on Tuesday, August 12, on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office reported.
The head-on collision was reported around 1:40 a.m. on the bridge along the 580 Freeway.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Cruzrenderos was driving a Honda Civic eastbound when he collided head-on with a Range Rover being driven westbound in the eastbound lanes.
The Range Rover caught fire and became fully engulfed in flames.
Cruzrenderos was killed in the crash.
The wrong-way driver was hospitalized with severe injuries.
Alcohol is being investigated as a possible contributing factor.

Richmond, CA. – An innocent driver died in a fiery wrong-way collision that also left the wrong-way driver in critical condition early Tuesday morning on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The accident occurred around 1:40 a.m. on the bridge located along the 580 Freeway, connecting Richmond and San Rafael.
CHP officers reported that the driver of a Range Rover was traveling westbound against the eastbound traffic when they crashed head-on with a Honda Civic.
The Range Rover caught fire and went up in flames after the crash.
Richmond firefighters responded and pronounced the Honda driver dead at the scene.
The driver of the Range Rover was hospitalized with severe injuries and listed in critical condition.
Alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor.
Investigators shut down the eastbound direction of the bridge for about three hours following the crash. The lanes were reopened around 5:30 a.m.
