Madera County, CA. – A 53-year-old Merced woman died, and two others were injured in a car collision after a driver allegedly fell asleep at the wheel Monday morning in Madera County.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred around 8:40 a.m. on Highway 233, also known as Robertson Boulevard, near Avenue 22.
CHP said a 19-year-old man from Madera was driving a white 2012 Chevrolet Silverado south on Highway 233, and a 46-year-old woman from Merced was driving a black 2015 BMW 320i northbound on the highway with the 53-year-old woman as her passenger.
The driver of the Chevrolet told authorities that he fell asleep and veered into the northbound lane. After the driver realized he was traveling the wrong way, he said he attempted to swerve back into the southbound lane, but the BMW also swerved to the southbound lane.
The vehicles collided, causing the Chevrolet to overturn onto its left side.
The BMW stopped on the west dirt shoulder.
The 53-year-old passenger in the BMW died in the crash.
The driver of the BMW was hospitalized with minor injuries.
The 19-year-old driver also suffered minor injuries that did not require hospitalization.
Authorities are investigating to determine the cause of the collision.
