Fresno, CA. – A 98-year-old woman died of injuries she sustained in a DUI accident that happened late Wednesday afternoon near Fresno Pacific University.

According to Fresno police, the woman, and an 82-year-old man were just before 6 p.m. crossing the street near Chestnut and Hamilton avenues when they were hit by a vehicle.

The woman was hospitalized in critical condition but later died while receiving treatment.

The man was also hospitalized with injuries to his head, ribs, and lungs.

56-year-old Marcello Gaytan was driving the car involved in the crash. He was arrested and booked into the Jail on various charges, including DUI causing injury or death, DUI over .08% causing injury or death, great bodily injury in the commission of a felony, and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. His bail was set at $382,000.

Fresno, CA. – An elderly couple was struck and injured by a DUI suspect late Wednesday afternoon as they crossed a street in Fresno.

According to Fresno police, the accident occurred around 5:50 p.m. near Chestnut and Hamilton avenues.

A man in his 80s and a woman in her 90s were crossing the street when they were hit by a van traveling northbound on Chestnut.

The woman was hospitalized in critical condition, while the man was hospitalized with minor injuries.

The driver of the van was identified as Marcello Gaytan. He was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

An investigation into the collision is ongoing.
