Hayward, CA – The Alameda County Sheriff’s Department Coroner’s Bureau identified the SUV driver who died after colliding with a box truck Tuesday afternoon near the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge in Hayward.
29-year-old Justin Matthews of San Ramon was killed in the crash that happened around 3:54 p.m. on July 21, 2026, on Highway 92 near Industrial Boulevard.
Matthews was the driver and sole occupant of a Toyota 4Runner towing a U-Haul trailer traveling westbound on Highway 92. The 4Runner collided with a 30-foot box truck under unclear circumstances. Matthews was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected from the car.
Paramedics took Matthews to Sutter Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where he was later pronounced dead.

Hayward, CA – A driver died in a collision involving an SUV and a box truck that happened Tuesday afternoon near the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge in Hayward.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the wreck took place around 3:54 p.m. on July 21, 2026, on westbound Highway 92 near Industrial Boulevard.
The accident involved a Toyota 4Runner towing a U-Haul trailer and a box truck.
CHP said the driver of the 4Runner was traveling westbound on the highway when it collided with a 30-foot box truck.
Investigators said the driver of the 4Runner was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was ejected from the vehicle.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene and transported the driver to Sutter Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley while performing CPR. The victim died just before 4:30 p.m. while receiving treatment.
It was unclear if the driver of the box truck was injured.
Authorities closed two lanes of Highway 92 until around 7 p.m. following the crash.
