San Jose has emerged as a national leader in reversing traffic fatality trends, achieving its lowest annual total in over a decade. According to 2025–2026 Vision Zero reports, the city recorded 41 traffic deaths in 2025, a 16% drop from 49 in 2024. This marks the second consecutive year of declines since a 2022 peak (63 deaths). While fatalities for motorists, cyclists, and motorcyclists all decreased last year, pedestrian fatalities remained flat at 20, representing nearly half of all road deaths. Preliminary data also suggests that while deaths are down, major injury accidents have not yet seen the same success, plateauing due to persistent high volumes on multi-lane arterial roads.
