A significant share of San Francisco ’s annual traffic accidents involves pedestrians, many of which result in severe, life-altering injuries or even death. To address this growing concern, various safety initiatives are being implemented across the city. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety‘s records, 3,433 people were killed or injured in traffic-related collisions in 2022 in San Francisco. Of these victims, 402 were bicyclists and 649 were pedestrians. Nearly 31% of all traffic-related injuries that year affected individuals who were not operating vehicles. Statewide, pedestrian and bicycle collisions have generally increased since 2014 and reached their highest levels between 2021 and 2023, underscoring the urgent need to prioritize the safety of vulnerable road users. San Francisco is one of the cities that record a high number of hit-and-run incidents. In 2022, nearly 16% of the traffic accidents were hit-and-runs, placing San Francisco among the top five cities with high number of hit-and-runs. Continued public awareness, stricter safety measures, and the expansion of dedicated bike lanes can play a crucial role in reducing these incidents and protecting cyclists and pedestrians.
