San Francisco, CA – Several people were injured when a vehicle crashed into the MiShalom Church in San Francisco on Sunday afternoon, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.
The accident happened at around 2 p.m. January 18, at 551 Nevada Street.
The SFFDÂ reported that a car plowed into the front door of the occupied church. It’s unclear what caused the car to crash into the building.
There were nearly 50 people inside the church at the time. Some of the occupants were hit by the debris from the crash but none of them was hit by the vehicle.
A child and six other parties were injured in the incident. Authorities reported that none of the injuries were serious but three people were transported to a hospital for further treatment.
It’s unclear whether the driver was also hurt in the accident.
Officials with the Department of Building and Inspections also responded to the incident and determined that the building was safe.
Authorities are still investigating to figure out what caused the accident.
San Francisco’s traffic safety remains a challenge despite Vision Zero initiatives launched in 2014 to eliminate fatalities by 2024. In 2024, the city recorded 39-43 fatal collisions, resulting in 41-43 deaths—the highest in over a decade—with pedestrians and vulnerable users disproportionately affected (drivers at fault in nearly 50% of pedestrian fatalities). Males comprised 81% of victims. 2025 saw a sharp improvement, with fatalities dropping nearly 50% to around 24, attributed to street redesigns, speed reductions, and enhanced enforcement. Injury crashes concentrate on the High Injury Network (12% of streets accounting for 68% of severe incidents).
