San Diego County recently ranked 17th out of 58 for pedestrian victims killed and injured in traffic collisions (where 1st is the highest crash rate), placing it in the more dangerous third of California counties for walkers. The county recorded 95 pedestrian deaths in a single year, the third-highest total in California, trailing only Los Angeles and San Bernardino. Roughly 50% of fatal pedestrian crashes occur between 6:00 PM and midnight, with Saturday nights being the deadliest window. Despite the high volume, the preliminary data for 2024 and 2025 show a double-digit percentage decline in fatalities, outperforming the state average.
