Bicycle safety in California has shown significant improvement, marked by a sharp 20.8% decrease in fatalities between 2022 and 2023. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and SafeTREC, bicyclist deaths fell from 183 to 145 during that period, with provisional 2024 and 2025 data suggesting a continued downward trend toward approximately 105 annual deaths. Despite these gains, California still accounts for roughly 12% of all national bicyclist fatalities, with urban areas being the primary danger zones.
Detailed analysis reveals that 90% of fatal crashes occur in urban settings, particularly on major arterials where speed limits often exceed 40 mph. Demographically, adult males remain the most vulnerable group, representing over 80% of fatalities, with those aged 55–64 being the most frequently involved. Nearly half of all serious injuries occur during the late afternoon and evening hours (3 PM to 9 PM).
