Newman, CA – At least one person was severely hurt in a multi-vehicle collision that happened late Sunday night on the 5 Freeway in Newman.
According to California Highway Patrol logs, the pileup was reported around 11:51 p.m. on the southbound 5 Freeway just north of West Sturh Road off-ramp.
Four vehicles, including a silver Nissan Pathfinder, a brown Chevrolet Equinox, and a Honda Civic, were involved in the accident. The Pathfinder overturned several times and landed back on its wheels off the roadway and down a hill.
The driver of a Honda Pilot reportedly attempted to avoid the original crash and ended up hitting a pedestrian.
Firefighters responded to the scene and requested an air ambulance to airlift at least one person who sustained serious injuries.
The freeway was closed to allow the helicopter to land in the southbound lanes.
Authorities are investigating to establish the factors surrounding the collision.
