Woman Dies in Monroe Pedestrian Accident on Highway 2 at Kelsey Street

Monroe, WA. – A 26-year-old woman died Tuesday morning after being struck by a vehicle on US Highway 2 in Monroe.

The crash was reported before 7 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Highway 2 near Kelsey Street. Police said the woman, a Monroe resident, was hit by an employee of the King County Sheriff’s Office who was driving an unmarked department vehicle.

She was taken to a local hospital where she later died from her injuries.

Police said the collision occurred in an uncontrolled section of the highway.

The Sheriff’s Office employee remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. The involved vehicle was impounded and taken to the Monroe Police Department for further examination.

Westbound lanes of US 2 were shut down for about three hours, with traffic detoured to Blueberry Lane Southeast.

Monroe Police are leading the investigation with assistance from the Washington State Patrol.

Snohomish County, where Monroe is located, experienced a troubling surge in traffic fatalities in 2024, recording 64 deaths, the highest count in nine years, and a stark contrast to the overall decline in deaths across Washington state. This represents a significant increase from the 43 fatalities reported in the county in 2023.  The majority of these fatal incidents are linked to specific high-risk driver behaviors. According to data analyzed by the Washington State Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC), roughly two-thirds (over 40 in 2024) of the deaths involved impaired drivers. Other contributing factors to fatalities include speeding and distracted driving. A substantial portion of these fatal crashes occurred on state routes, which saw deaths more than double from 16 in 2023 to 34 in 2024. Single-vehicle crashes accounted for 54% of deaths, and a majority occurred in urban areas under dry conditions.
