Bakersfield, CA – A 76-year-old man and a 66-year-old woman were killed in a traffic collision on Highway 65 in Bakersfield on Saturday.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened on State Route 65 at Famoso Road September 20.
A preliminary investigation revealed that a 76-year-old man driving an eastbound 2016 Honda Fit on Famoso Road ran a red light, entered the intersection with the highway and was struck by a southbound 2014 Freightliner tractor-trailer on Highway 65 driven by 55-year-old man.
As a result of the incident, the Honda lost control and came to rest on the east dirt shoulder. The Freightliner also veered out of control, hitting a dirt embankment and overturning.
The incident completely blocked both northbound and southbound lanes.
Both the driver of the Honda and his 66-year-old female passenger were declared dead at the scene. The driver of the Freightliner was transported to Kern Medical Hospital with minor to moderate injuries.
The names of the deceased were not immediately disclosed
Alcohol and drugs were not believed to be the cause of the wreck.
