Los Angeles, CA – Pedestrian Killed in Crash on Harbor and Santa Monica Freeways Connector

Los Angeles, CA — A pedestrian was found dead early Friday morning after an accident at a major downtown freeway connector in Los Angeles, the California Highway Patrol reported.

CHP officers were dispatched at approximately 2:57 a.m. to the northbound Harbor (110) Freeway to the westbound Santa Monica (10) Freeway connector, where the victim was located on the roadway, authorities said.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced the pedestrian dead. The victim’s identity, age, and gender were not immediately released.

As a result of the investigation, the CHP issued a SigAlert, closing two lanes on both the 110 Freeway and the 10 Freeway while officers examined the scene and awaited the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.

All lanes were reopened at approximately 6:30 a.m., and the SigAlert was lifted.

The circumstances leading up to the fatal collision remain under investigation.

According to California’s Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) data, Los Angeles city has consistently ranked poorly for serious traffic collisions in recent years. In 2022, there were 8,944 total fatal and injury victims in collisions in Los Angeles, placing the city 14th worst out of 15 similar jurisdictions in OTS rankings. In 2023, that number improved slightly to 8,116 victims but still ranked 15/15, showing that serious crashes remain among the highest in the state. Speed-related collisions were a major factor, with 1,104 speed-related fatal and injury crashes in 2023, and hit-and-run collisions numbered over 2,500 cases. Pedestrian and bicyclist involvement also remained high: in 2023, there were 1,432 pedestrian victims and 393 bicyclist victims in fatal or injury collisions, both ranking poorly compared to other large California cities. Looking back to 2021, Los Angeles had 11,202 victims of fatal and injury crashes, ranking 13/15, indicating some long-term improvement but still high collision rates overall.
