Santa Barbara County reflects a complex safety landscape where a 40% statewide decline in road fatalities contrasts with a steady local rise in injury-involved collisions. According to 2023–2024 OTS rankings, the county recorded 123 pedestrian victims killed or injured, ranking 25th out of 58 California counties. While this places the county in the middle for overall safety, specific vulnerabilities exist: it ranks 16th worst for pedestrian injuries to children under 15 and 17th worst for nighttime incidents. Notably, the City of Santa Barbara recently reported a five-year peak in collisions, with pedestrians and cyclists disproportionately suffering severe injuries despite lower overall traffic volumes.
