Car collision statistics in San Diego County, as per the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) via the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), reveal a pattern of high volume with some recent stabilization or decline amid statewide improvements. The county, home to over 3.3 million residents and major routes like I-5, I-15, and I-805, consistently reports thousands of crashes annually due to urban density, commuter traffic, and tourism. In 2022, San Diego County saw approximately 12,838 crashes, resulting in 285 fatalities and 17,386 injuries, with many on state highways (about 35%). OTS rankings placed it mid-to-high in exposure categories (e.g., total fatal/injury victims around 17,685 in some 2022 data points, ranking 17/58 among counties). Speeding, alcohol involvement (e.g., thousands of alcohol-related victims), distracted driving, and vulnerable user incidents (pedestrians, cyclists) remain key factors. Statewide OTS trends show traffic fatalities dropping nearly 11% from 4,539 in 2022 to 4,061 in 2023, with mileage death rates falling 6% to 1.26 per 100 million miles traveled. Regional data from SANDAG indicates over 23,000 collisions in 2023, suggesting persistent high numbers but potential alignment with broader declines through Vision Zero initiatives, enforcement, and infrastructure upgrades. While fatalities and severe injuries fluctuate (e.g., post-pandemic rebounds followed by improvements), ongoing efforts aim to reduce risks in this high-traffic area.
