Huntington Beach, CA. – One man was killed and three others were injured Tuesday afternoon after a seven-vehicle crash involving an Orange County Probation Department, according to the Huntington Beach Police Department.
The collision occurred around 2:45 p.m. at Goldenwest Street and Heil Avenue.
Investigators said a dark-colored sedan was traveling eastbound on Heil Avenue at extremely high speed when it clipped another vehicle in the intersection. Witnesses reported the car may have been moving at more than 100 mph.
The impact sent the sedan airborne before it struck additional vehicles and overturned, coming to rest on its roof roughly a half-mile from the intersection.
One driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Three others were transported to area hospitals with injuries that were not expected to be life-threatening.
The Orange County Probation Department confirmed that two of the injured victims were probation officers, one of whom was hospitalized.
The crash remains under investigation.
Car crash trends in Huntington Beach show that the city consistently experiences a significant number of traffic accidents, with approximately 1,000 fatal or injury accidents annually. While statewide accident rates in California saw a peak in 2021 followed by a slight decline, accident rates in busy urban areas like Huntington Beach remain a persistent concern. The city is a high-risk area within Orange County, which itself is one of California's most accident-prone regions. A notable trend is the concentration of collisions at specific, high-traffic intersections. Several of Orange County's most dangerous intersections are located in Huntington Beach, including Ellis & Newland, Gothard & Heil, and Magnolia & Yorktown. Major thoroughfares like Beach Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway also frequently see accidents, often due to high traffic volume, speed, and proximity to shopping areas and freeway ramps.
