Fresno, CA – Melissa Culver was among several people injured in a crash that left one person dead on Highway 99 in Fresno Sunday morning.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the pile-up was reported at about 9:15 a.m. January 11, on southbound Highway 99 between Cedar and North avenues.
Melissa and her husband were riding in a blue Hyundai that got caught up in a 17-vehicle pile-up. Initial investigations reveal that cars slowed down due to fog and were hit by other fast-moving vehicles.
A passenger in one of the vehicles got out after the initial crash and was hit by other vehicles. The passenger died at the scene.
The Fresno County Coroner's Office identified the deceased victim as Gustavo Villanueva Vargas, 61.
Several other involved parties, including minors, were transported to hospitals with minor to major injuries.
Melissa sustained bruises to her chest and forearms while her husband had bruises and multiple cuts.
A section of Highway 99 was temporarily shut down as authorities worked at the scene. The California Highway Patrol said fog was a factor in the collision, which remains under investigation.
