Teen Killed in Fresno Motorcycle Crash on Auberry Road and Summit Mountain Road

Fresno, CA – A teenager from Kansas was killed in a motorcycle crash at an intersection near Fresno on Friday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The deadly crash occurred shortly before 3 p.m. January 2, on Auberry Road, just south of Summit Mountain Road.

A 17-year-old Kansas boy was riding a motorcycle on Auberry Road when, for unknown reasons, he crashed into a Ford F-350 truck. The teen was traveling alongside a family member when the accident happened.

The impact of the crash ejected the teen and threw him nearly 75 feet from the point of the collision.

The California Highway Patrol and emergency crews were dispatched to the scene. Despite CPR performed by the medical personnel, the teen died of his injuries at the scene.

The driver of the truck was unhurt and remained at the scene. The names of the involved motorcyclist and the truck driver were not released.

The California Highway Patrol is currently trying to find out what led up to the incident.

Fresno County continues to be a high-risk area for traffic collisions, though recent data shows some improvement in fatal crash numbers. In 2023, Fresno County recorded 126 fatal collisions, a meaningful decline from a peak in the prior year (206 deaths in 2022), mirroring an 11% statewide decrease in traffic fatalities in California overall. Despite this year-over-year improvement, the county still experiences a high volume of incidents, averaging 7-8 police-reported crashes daily in the city of Fresno alone. Injury collisions vastly outnumber fatalities, and vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and motorcyclists, remain at elevated risk.  A significant portion of crashes is attributed to specific contributing factors and locations. Alcohol and drug-impaired driving consistently rank as the top contributing factors for both fatal and serious injury crashes. From 2018 to 2022, Fresno County ranked as the 15th highest county in the nation for fatal hit-and-run incidents. Major thoroughfares like Highway 99 and Highway 41, particularly unwidened or poorly lit sections, have been identified as particularly deadly due to old infrastructure, high speeds, and traffic volume.
