Encinitas, CA. — A child was hospitalized Wednesday evening after a truck crashed into a gelato shop in downtown Encinitas, authorities said.
The incident occurred around 6 p.m. at Gelato 101, located on the 400 block of South Coast Highway 101 at D Street.
According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, Edward De La Torre was driving a 2026 Chevy Silverado heading north when he collided into the back of a 2022 Toyota Prius, sending his truck careening into the storefront.
A child who was seated inside the shop with family members was struck and pinned beneath the truck.
Emergency personnel responded and freed the boy. He was transported to the hospital in unknown condition. He was conscious and breathing.
De La Torre was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. He was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Officials said the truck remained lodged inside the building until a structural engineer responded to assess the damage and determine the safety of the structure.
