Chico, CA – An early morning collision between a train and a pedestrian left one person dead near Chico State on Monday, according to the Chico Police Department.
At around 2 a.m. February 9, authorities responded to reports of a crash in the area of West Sacramento Avenue and North Cedar Street.
At the scene, the CPD located a deceased pedestrian who had apparently been hit by a northbound Antrak train. The circumstances of the crash, including reasons as to why the pedestrian was on the tracks, were not immediately established.
The train operator reported that they saw the pedestrian on the tracks but was unable to stop in time.
The Butte County Sheriff’s Office responded to the site of the accident and took custody of the pedestrian’s remains.
The victim’s identity was not immediately released and authorities do not belive they were a student at Chico State.
The train remained at the scene for several hours after the accident but traffic in the area was not impacted.
At this time, no additional details on the incident have been made available. Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing and further details are expected once authorities conclude the investigations.
Drivers are required by law to exercise due care to avoid collisions with pedestrians. Pedestrians walking in marked and unmarked crosswalks at intersections have the right of way. Furthermore, pedestrians attempting to cross outside of the crosswalks must yield to vehicles to avoid being hit. Pedestrians should also walk facing traffic when walking on a roadway that lacks a sidewalk. These laws are put into consideration when determining fault and liability in cases of pedestrian accidents.
