San Diego, CA. – A woman was killed Tuesday afternoon after being struck by a pickup truck in a hit-and-run crash in the Ocean Beach area of San Diego, authorities reported.

According to the San Diego Police Department, the incident occurred just before 4:45 p.m. near Ocean Beach Branch Library in the 4800 block of Santa Monica Avenue.

Investigators said a 2002 Toyota Tundra parked facing the north curbline of Santa Monica Avenue suddenly accelerated forward while attempting to leave.

The truck hit a 59-year-old woman who was sitting on the sidewalk.

Police said the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot.

Paramedics transported the woman to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

The driver eventually returned to the scene and was arrested.

The San Diego Police Department’s Traffic Division is leading the investigation.
