Long Beach has seen a troubling rise in traffic crashes, with 2025 marking one of the deadliest years on record. As of late December 2025, the city recorded 53 fatal collisions, surpassing previous highs and making it California's 8th deadliest for surface streets and freeways per state data. This spike follows lower counts in recent years, with fatalities often involving pedestrians and drivers. From July 2024 to July 2025, there were 215 pedestrian-involved crashes citywide, many on high-injury corridors like Pacific Coast Highway, Anaheim Street, 7th Street, Long Beach Boulevard, and Atlantic Avenue. Speeding, distracted driving, DUI, and street racing remain primary causes, contributing to thousands of injury collisions annually. Despite Vision Zero efforts aiming for zero fatalities by 2026—including infrastructure upgrades and upcoming speed cameras—rates remain elevated, highlighting urgent needs for enforcement and safer street design.
