Winters, CA – Authorities have identified the Vacaville woman who died in a wrong-way crash involving a DUI driver that happened early Sunday morning on Interstate 505 in Winters.
66-year-old Riza Retome was the sole occupant of a 2026 Nissan Kicks that was involved in the collision with a 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe around 12:40 a.m. on August 30, 2026, on southbound I-505 south of Putah Creek Road.
Retome was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
The driver of the Tahoe, identified as 47-year-old Angel Barrera Zapata of Vallejo, was arrested after investigators established that he was highly intoxicated when he drove in the wrong direction on the interstate and collided head-on with Retome’s car. He was immediately booked into the Solano County Jail and later charged with DUI, causing bodily injury, and vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. He was being held on $105,000 bail until Monday morning, when he posted a bond and was released.

Winters, CA – A 66-year-old Vacaville woman was killed in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 505 early Sunday morning, and a Vallejo man was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The victim was a 66-year-old White female from Vacaville who was the driver and sole occupant of a Nissan Kicks. Her identity was not released.
The fatal collision occurred at approximately 12:40 a.m. Sunday, August 30, 2026, on southbound I-505 just south of Putah Creek Road.
According to CHP, a 45-year-old Hispanic man from Vallejo was driving a 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe when he missed an exit and made a U-turn on the freeway. Investigators said the driver was highly intoxicated and mistakenly believed he was traveling on a two-way county road. He then traveled northbound in the southbound lanes of I-505 and collided head-on with the Nissan Kicks.
The Nissan driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The Tahoe driver, who was also a sole occupant, suffered minor injuries and was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI. After medical clearance, he is expected to be booked into the Solano County Jail.
Three additional vehicles were damaged after striking debris from the initial collision.
CHP Solano Area officers responded after an automated iPhone crash alert was received and investigated the collision. Authorities also worked to clear the roadway and manage traffic during the investigation.
Southbound I-505 traffic was diverted at Putah Creek Road while the crash investigation and cleanup were underway. The freeway was fully reopened at approximately 4:20 a.m.
The crash remains under investigation. CHP is asking anyone with additional information about the collision to contact the Solano Area office.
