Preliminary reports indicate that a white Freightliner commercial vehicle was traveling south on Highway 97 when it hit a pedestrian in the roadway. The victim is believed to have been retrieving his dog after it ran into the highway.

Chemult, OR – A pedestrian was hit and killed by a big rig on Monday night near Chemult in Klamath County, according to the Oregon State Police.
The accident took place at around 10:07 p.m. June 22, on Highway 97 near milepost 200.
Preliminary reports indicate that a white Freightliner commercial vehicle was traveling south on Highway 97 when it hit a pedestrian in the roadway. The victim is believed to have been retrieving his dog after it ran into the highway.
The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the big rig was uninjured and stayed at the scene after the accident.
The OSP was assisted at the scene by the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office, the Oregon Department of Transportation, and the Chemult Rural Fire Protection District.
The highway was shut down for hours as authorities worked at the scene.
The Oregon State Police is still investigating to determine the cause of the accident and additional details are expected to be released.
