Encinitas, CA – An investigation is underway into an incident where a train struck and killed a pedestrian in the Cardiff area of Encinitas on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, the incident took place near Chesterfield Drive and Southcoast Highway 101 at around 1 p.m. on April 22.

According to initial reports, a pedestrian was hit by a Coaster train on the tracks. It’s unclear how the victim was hit and how they ended up on the tracks.

Authorities responded to the incident and the pedestrian was confirmed deceased at the scene. The pedestrian’s name, age, or gender were not released by the authorities.

There were no reports of injuries to the occupants of the train.

The North County Transit District informed travellers to expect delays on the Coaster service as the tracks were shut down between the Solana Beach and Encinitas stations.

The San Diego County Sheriff Department’s Railroad Enforcement Unit is conducting an investigation into the incident.
