According to the California Highway Patrol, the pileup was reported around 9 p.m. on March 28 on Highway 101 near Higueroa Ranch.

Authorities reported that the driver of a Toyota Camry attempted to make a left turn from Higueroa Ranch across the northbound lanes and onto southbound Highway 101 when a Toyota Highlander crashed into the Camry.

The Camry stopped in the northbound lane after the first impact. A woman seated in the front passenger seat opened the car door and began to step out. At that time, a Hyundai Tucson heading northbound struck the Camry.

San Luis Obispo City is facing a pivotal moment in its traffic safety history, having recorded 19 fatalities between 2020 and 2024—the highest five-year total since its safety program began two decades ago. According to the city’s Vision Zero data, while severe incidents are concentrated, they are incredibly lethal for vulnerable users: 69% of fatal collisions involve pedestrians or cyclists. Furthermore, motorcyclists account for 18% of fatal and severe injuries despite representing only 1% of total city trips. The city’s “High Injury Network” (HIN) identifies that 80% of severe collisions occur on just 11% of its streets, primarily high-speed arterials like Broad Street, Higuera Street, and Los Osos Valley Road. Primary crash factors include unsafe speed (present in 81% of fatals) and DUI (25%).
