Manteca serves as a critical, high-risk transit hub where the SR-99, I-5, and SR-120 converge, driving a safety profile heavily influenced by regional freight and commuter volume. According to the 2023 California Office of Traffic Safety OTS rankings, Manteca recorded 221 victims killed or injured, ranking 78th out of 103 similar-sized cities—a relatively strong performance compared to peers. However, the city faces specific challenges in motorcycle and youth safety; it ranked 1st worst for motorcycle injuries in its group. Furthermore, a fatal January 2026 collision involving a semi-truck on Highway 99 near Lathrop Road highlighted the ongoing danger posed by heavy commercial traffic on the city’s freeway segments.
