San Diego’s significant population leads to major traffic, which heightens the risk of auto accidents. It’s essential to remain vigilant and watchful for distracted, impaired, and aggressive drivers to ensure safety on the roads in our region. Traffic accidents in San Diego led to a concerning total of 4851 injuries and fatalities in 2022, marking a 4% drop from the prior year. This uptick highlights specific trouble spots throughout the city, particularly at several busy intersections. Notably, University Avenue and 52nd Street and 6th Avenue and Broadway have been identified as some of the most dangerous. The volume of traffic and congestion in these areas contributes heavily to the risks.

Moreover, factors such as speed and alcohol continue to be major contributors to these incidents. In 2022, speeding was involved in 15% of the accidents, while alcohol impaired drivers in 13% of cases. In response, local authorities in San Diego are strongly advising drivers to refrain from drinking and driving and to reduce their speed. They emphasize that addressing these issues is crucial for enhancing safety, as speeding remains one of the primary causes of fatal accidents in California.
