LA’s Traffic Environment and Why Intersections Matter

With nearly 4 million residents and millions more traveling in daily for work and tourism, Los Angeles has one of the most complex urban traffic systems in the United States. Major freeways such as the Interstate 405, Interstate 10, U.S. Route 101, and Interstate 5 feed into dense networks of arterial streets and signalized intersections. While freeways often draw attention for congestion, city data consistently shows that many of the most severe crashes occur not on highways but at busy surface-street intersections.

According to the most recent available figures from the California Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), Los Angeles records thousands of injury collisions each year. In 2023, the city reported more than 10,000 traffic collisions involving injury or death. Of those, a substantial share occurred at or within close proximity to intersections. Fatal traffic crashes have also remained a serious concern. In 2023, Los Angeles saw over 300 traffic-related deaths, including drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and cyclists. Intersections play a central role in many of these tragedies.

Notorious Collision Hotspots in Los Angeles

Several intersections across Los Angeles have repeatedly ranked among the most dangerous based on multi-year crash totals.

S Figueroa Street and Slauson Avenue

This intersection in the Vermont Slauson neighborhood of South Los Angeles is the city’s most crash‑prone location, with about 66 serious collisions recorded between early 2021 and early 2025 by LAPD/SWITRS data. Its proximity to the 110 Freeway off‑ramp adds merging and weaving traffic to an already busy urban crossing. A notable incident in 2025 involved a multi‑vehicle crash during midday signal changes that left at least one driver with significant injuries.

Sepulveda Boulevard and Roscoe Boulevard

In Panorama City, the intersection of Sepulveda and Roscoe ranks second with around 65 serious collisions over the same time span. The nearby 405 Freeway contributes heavy traffic flows that complicate turning movements and speed transitions. More recently in 2025, a crash involving two passenger vehicles occurred when one failed to yield on a left turn, resulting in injuries.

Figueroa Street and Manchester Boulevard

The junction of Figueroa and Manchester in South Los Angeles recorded about 61 serious crashes from 2021 through early 2025. High volumes of buses, commuters, and local traffic contribute to frequent collisions. During the afternoon rush in early 2025, a rear‑end crash here forced emergency responders to treat multiple people for injuries amid gridlocked signal traffic.

Roscoe Boulevard and Van Nuys Boulevard

This busy San Fernando Valley intersection saw approximately 59 serious collisions over four years. In 2025, a left‑turn collision occurred when one vehicle failed to properly judge a turning gap, leading to injuries for both drivers. Proximity to commercial centers and high commuter flow creates many points of conflict.

Western Avenue and Slauson Avenue

With about 56 serious crashes recorded, Western and Slauson is another South LA crossroads with frequent crash activity. In 2025, a collision involving a left‑turning vehicle and a motorcycle led to injuries for the rider when the vehicle failed to yield at the signal.

Broadway and Manchester Avenue

This intersection has seen around 53 serious collisions in recent years. A notable crash in early 2025 involved several vehicles after one driver failed to stop in time at the signal, resulting in injuries and a multi‑unit response from emergency services.

The Scale of the Problem Citywide

Citywide data shows that intersections account for a large percentage of serious and fatal crashes. In Los Angeles, roughly 40 percent or more of injury collisions occur at intersections, aligning with national patterns. However, pedestrian fatalities are even more heavily concentrated at crossroads, with pedestrian fatalities being reported at 40 percent of total fatalities in 2023.

Contributing Factors Behind Intersection Collisions

Several common elements make Los Angeles intersections especially hazardous:

  • High traffic volumes: Major arterials carry tens of thousands of vehicles daily, increasing conflict points.
  • Complex turning movements: Multiple left-turn lanes and permissive turn signals can lead to misjudgment.
  • Speeding: Wide road designs often encourage higher travel speeds, reducing reaction time.
  • Distracted driving: Mobile device use remains a major factor in urban crashes.
  • Pedestrian density: In commercial districts and near transit stops, foot traffic significantly increases risk.

Ongoing Safety Efforts

Los Angeles has adopted a Vision Zero strategy aimed at eliminating traffic fatalities. Safety improvements include leading pedestrian intervals, protected left-turn phases, curb extensions, upgraded crosswalk markings, and automated speed enforcement proposals. Some high-risk intersections have undergone redesigns to reduce lane widths and calm traffic.

A Community Responsibility

If you regularly travel through busy Los Angeles corridors, exercise extra caution at major crossroads, especially those known for high crash counts. Defensive driving and heightened awareness can make a meaningful difference.
