3 Men Seriously Hurt in Highway 50 Crash in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe, CA – Three men who were working to fix a tire along Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe were hit and severely injured by another vehicle on Monday afternoon.

According to the California Highway Patrol, authorities responded at about 12:50 p.m. February 16, to the crash at the Echo Summit just east of Johnson Pass Road.

Authorities reported that a Kia sedan was stopped in a turnout along eastbound US 50 and the driver was attempting to fix the tire. Two passersby also stopped to help the driver of the Kia.

As the three were trying to adjust the chain on the Kia’s left front tire, a westbound Chevrolet Silverado lost control on the snow-covered roadway and drifted into the eastbound side, where it struck the Kia and the three pedestrians.

According to the CHP, one of the pedestrians was thrown approximately 40 feet from the point of the impact and came to a rest on the right shoulder. The other two pedestrians were dragged a short distance by the Chevrolet before it came to a stop.

Caltrans crews and passersby helped pull the trapped pedestrians from the Chevrolet. All three pedestrians, aged between 21 and 23, were transported to Barton Memorial Hospital for treatment of major injuries.

The two occupants of the Chevrolet, a 17-year-old and a 21-year-old, both from Sacramento, had minor injuries and were treated by medics.

Authorities reported that alcohol and drugs were not suspected to have been a factor in the incident. The CHP is still conducting an investigation into the incident.

In California, drivers are required by law to exercise due care to avoid collisions with pedestrians. Pedestrians walking in marked and unmarked crosswalks at intersections have the right of way. Furthermore, pedestrians attempting to cross outside of the crosswalks must yield to vehicles to avoid being hit. Pedestrians should also walk facing traffic when walking on a roadway that lacks a sidewalk. These laws are put into consideration when determining fault and liability in cases of pedestrian accidents.
