Westley, CA – A chain-reaction collision that occurred on Interstate 5 near Westley in Stanislaus County on Tuesday claimed the life of one person, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Shortly after 4:00 p.m. on February 10, authorities responded to reports of a multi-vehicle crash in the southbound lanes near Ingram Creek Road.

Preliminary investigations indicate that a 2018 Toyota pickup truck was traveling in the right lane of southbound I-5 when it crashed into the rear of a Toyota SUV stopped along the shoulder.

The initial impact caused a chain-reaction collision involving two other passenger vehicles that were also stopped in traffic. The Toyota pickup then crashed into the back of a stopped Freightliner big rig.

The driver of the pickup truck was declared deceased at the scene. His identity was withheld pending notification of the next-of-kin.

No other injuries were reported in the accident all other involved drivers stayed at the scene after the accident.

Authorities noted that the pickup driver was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. It’s unclear whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the incident.

At least one southbound lane of I-5 was shut as authorities investigated the incident and firefighters cleared the scene.

The California Highway Patrol is working to to determine the contributing factors to the collision.
