Ernesto Monterroza Identified as Man Killed in Victorville Pedestrian Crash on Hook Boulevard

Victorville, CA – Authorities have released the identity of a pedestrian who died after being hit by a vehicle on Hook Boulevard in Victorville on Saturday night.

Ernesto Alonso Monterroza, 42, was the victim of the accident that took place at about 6:49 p.m. January 31, in the 17000 block of Hook Boulevard near High Desert Church.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, the pedestrian was walking from the direction of the church near Hook Park when a white 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan struck him.

Witnesses stopped at the site of the accident and attempted to render first aid to the injured pedestrian before emergency crews responded.

Personnel including the the Victorville City Fire Department arrived a few minutes after receiving reports of the incident and located the pedestrian down in the sidewalk near Hook Park.

Paramedics confirmed the pedestrian deceased at the scene. Family members have setup a GoFundMe account for Monterroza to aid in his funeral arrangements and other immediate costs.

The female driver of the van was at the scene when authorities arrived and was cooperative with law enforcement. The driver’s name has not yet been released.

Due to the accident, the van sustained damage to its hood and the right front passenger side.

Both directions of Hook Boulevard were shut down between Ashley Glenn and Arlette drives as authorities examined and cleared the scene.

An investigation by San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is ongoing and further details are expected to be released once the investigation is completed.

In 2022, Victorville recorded 42 pedestrians killed or injured in traffic collisions, placing the city 27th among similar-sized California cities for pedestrian victims. Of those, 7 victims were under age 15, and 4 were age 65 or older, highlighting risk among both youth and older adults. Pedestrian crashes made up a significant portion of the city’s total collision victims (626) that year.
