San Francisco, CA – Three people were hospitalized Sunday afternoon after a vehicle crashed into a traffic light pole near Stonestown Galleria shopping center, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.
Firefighters responded to the solo car collision at the intersection of Winston Drive and Junipero Serra Boulevard, approximately one block from the shopping center’s parking lot.
Officials said a car struck and knocked down a traffic signal pole.
SFFD confirmed that three occupants were transported to area hospitals, though their conditions were not immediately released.
Due to the damaged pole, the southbound lanes of Junipero Serra Boulevard were temporarily shut down.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
According to the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) crash rankings for 2023, San Francisco recorded 3,505 total victims killed or injured in traffic collisions that year — placing the city 9th among similar California cities for combined fatal and injury crashes. Based on crash types; 648 pedestrian victims and 397 bicyclist victims were involved in fatal or injury collisions, both ranking high among peer cities. Motorcycle-involved injuries numbered 406. Alcohol-involved crashes accounted for 344 victims, with younger and mid-aged drinking drivers contributing to notable numbers. Speed-related collisions (486) and hit-and-run collisions (493) were also significant contributors to serious crash counts in 2023. San Francisco had 528 nighttime fatal and injury collisions (9 pm–2:59 am), indicating riskier conditions during late hours. One standout enforcement metric was 255 DUI arrests, ranking the city highly for DUI enforcement efforts among its peers.
