San Francisco’s traffic safety remains a challenge despite Vision Zero initiatives launched in 2014 to eliminate fatalities by 2024. In 2024, the city recorded 39-43 fatal collisions, resulting in 41-43 deaths—the highest in over a decade—with pedestrians and vulnerable users disproportionately affected (drivers at fault in nearly 50% of pedestrian fatalities). Males comprised 81% of victims. 2025 saw a sharp improvement, with fatalities dropping nearly 50% to around 24, attributed to street redesigns, speed reductions, and enhanced enforcement. Pedestrians, especially older adults (75% of pedestrian deaths), and hit-and-runs persist as key concerns. Injury crashes concentrate on the High Injury Network (12% of streets accounting for 68% of severe incidents).
