According to data from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and the UC Berkeley Transportation Injury Mapping System (TIMS), Oceanside experiences a significant number of car crashes annually, with an average of one to two collisions occurring every day. In 2022, Oceanside recorded 890 victims killed or injured in total fatal and injury collisions, a slight increase from the 835 victims in 2021. The city also ranked highly in specific collision categories, such as first among 61 similarly sized cities for motorcycle-involved victims in both 2021 and 2022.  The leading causes of these accidents include speeding and distracted driving. Speed was a factor in over one-third of all collisions in 2021, and alcohol-impaired driving accounted for about 10% of crashes. While the overall number of accidents has fluctuated in recent years, fatal accidents have shown a concerning upward trend, more than doubling from 8 in 2018 to 16 in 2021. The most common type of accident in Oceanside is rear-end collisions, making up about 34% of all incidents. The OTS utilizes this data for its annual rankings to help inform and support local traffic safety programs aimed at reducing injuries and fatalities.
