San Francisco, CA. – A pedestrian was killed Wednesday evening in a hit-and-run crash on Mission Street, according to the San Francisco Police Department.
The collision occurred around 6:05 p.m. December 18 in the 5500 block of Mission Street. Officers responded to the scene and found the pedestrian with fatal injuries. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the driver involved in the crash fled before officers arrived. Authorities have not released a description of the suspect vehicle.
The San Francisco Police Department is investigating the incident.
San Francisco traffic statistics show a concerning trend of increasing fatalities despite declining injury crashes in recent years. In 2024, the city recorded 43 traffic fatalities, the highest annual total since 2005, a sharp increase from previous years. This occurred even as non-fatal injury collisions decreased by approximately 16% when comparing 2015-2019 to 2020-2024, largely due to reduced travel during the pandemic. This divergence has resulted in a 42% increase in the ratio of fatal to injury crashes post-pandemic compared to pre-pandemic levels. Pedestrians remain the most vulnerable road users, accounting for 24 deaths in 2024, the highest annual total since 2007. By contrast, in 2023, there were 26 total fatalities, 18 of which were pedestrians, and no cyclist deaths were recorded that year. Common primary collision factors contributing to these incidents include unsafe speed, driver violations of a traffic signal, and failure to yield to pedestrians at a crosswalk. The majority of severe and fatal crashes in the city (over 75%) occur on just 12% of its streets, known as the Vision Zero High Injury Network, prompting targeted safety interventions in these areas. This data indicates that while overall crash numbers may have shifted, the severity of collisions and the risk to vulnerable road users have heightened, leading to the failure of the city’s Vision Zero goal to eliminate traffic deaths by the end of 2024.
