Hit-and-run crashes represent a significant and ongoing public safety concern in San Jose, CA, with hundreds of incidents occurring annually and the problem described as a “serious and continuing problem” for local residents. In recent years, San Jose has grappled with high rates of traffic fatalities, experiencing its deadliest year in 2022 with 65 people killed in total traffic incidents. Hit-and-run incidents are a notable portion of overall collisions; for example, there were 283 hit-and-run fatal and injury collisions in San Jose in 2022 alone. This figure contributes to a broader trend where, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety, Santa Clara County experienced 754 hit-and-run accidents resulting in death or injury in 2016, a relatively high number despite the county being ranked safer than others in some metrics.  A high percentage of accidents, especially fatal ones, involve drivers fleeing the scene; nationally, the percentage of fatalities involving a driver fleeing reaches a high of over 20% when only considering crashes with pedestrian victims. The San Jose Police Department (SJPD) notes that many severe and fatal crashes, including hit-and-runs, occur on busier, multi-lane roadways during darkness, often involving factors like driver inattention, speeding, or failure to obey traffic laws. In 2023, there were 49 total traffic-related deaths, a slight decrease from 2022, but individual fatal hit-and-run cases, particularly involving pedestrians, continue to be reported frequently into late 2024 and 2025, highlighting the persistent nature of the issue.
