San Francisco, CA – A young child was killed Sunday morning after being struck by a vehicle in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley neighborhood, authorities said.
The fatal collision occurred just after 10:35 a.m. at the intersection of Hayes Street and Webster Street, according to the San Francisco Police Department.
Officers arrived at the scene and found the child seriously injured in the roadway.
Police and paramedics immediately rendered aid before the child was transported to a local hospital, where they later died from their injuries.
The driver involved in the collision remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Police have not indicated whether any arrests have been made or whether drugs or alcohol are suspected as contributing factors.
SFPD has not released the child’s name, age, or gender. However, neighbors told local media that the victim was a young boy between approximately 18 months and 2 years old and that his family had lived in the neighborhood for many years.
Residents described the intersection as busy, with frequent vehicle and pedestrian traffic, and expressed concerns about safety in the area. A memorial of flowers was placed at the intersection in honor of the child.
The incident remains under investigation by the SFPD.
San Francisco experienced one of its deadliest years for traffic violence in over two decades in 2024, with 43 people killed in traffic collisions, the highest annual total since 2005. This marks a significant increase from 26 fatalities in 2023 and runs contrary to the city’s “Vision Zero” goal to eliminate all traffic deaths by 2024. While overall injury-causing collisions have declined since the pre-pandemic years (likely due to reduced transportation activity), the severity of crashes has increased, with the ratio of fatal to injury crashes rising by 42 percent post-pandemic. A major concern is the high number of pedestrian deaths, which accounted for 24 of the fatalities in 2024, the highest number since 2007. Key factors contributing to these crashes often involve driver behavior, with unsafe speed and violation of a traffic signal among the most common primary collision factors in fatal incidents. Over 70% of injury collisions occur at intersections, with specific locations like Gough and Market streets and Market and Octavia streets identified as high-collision areas.
