A man on a wheelchair was trying to cross O Street outside of the crosswalk when he was hit by a vehicle traveling northbound at a high rate of speed.

Bakersfield, CA.- A wheelchair rider was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Bakersfield on Thursday morning, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.

The accident occurred on O Street near Stella Hills Elementary School at about 6:25 a.m.

A man on a wheelchair was trying to cross O Street outside of the crosswalk when he was hit by a vehicle traveling northbound at a high rate of speed.

Authorities responded to the scene and found the pedestrian suffering from major injuries.

The man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The involved driver fled the scene after the accident.

The Bakersfield Police Department is conducting an investigation into the collision.
