Oakley, California (August 25, 2021) – Authorities have identified the 12-year-old boy who died after a freight train collided with several vehicles Wednesday afternoon in Oakley as Joshua Schaefer.

The deadly collision happened just before 1:00 p.m. at the railroad crossing at East Cypress Road and Main Street.

According to the authorities, the railroad crossing gates were coming down, and a gray Lexus SUV heading westbound on East Cypress Road tried to go around them when it was hit from the back by the train.

The impact caused the SUV to overturn. Three other vehicles were also involved.

Deadly Train Accident at East Cypress Road and Main Street in Oakley

Schaefer, who was a passenger in the SUV, was pronounced dead at the scene. The SUV driver, a 19-year-old woman, was airlifted to a local hospital in critical condition.

Further details regarding the accident were not immediately available.

The crash remains under investigation.
