Effects of Paraplegia
Paraplegia is a medical condition wherein the victim suffers from partial or total paralysis of the legs. Paraplegia is caused by a spinal cord injury that occurs below the first thoracic vertebra in the spine, which is located just below the base of the neck. A motor vehicle accident, slip and fall, sports injury, workplace accident, or attack may cause serious injury to the back or spine and thus result in paraplegia.
Depending on the extent of damage the spinal cord sustains, the victim may suffer from partial or total loss of feelings of the legs or any point from the chest and below. Paraplegics are able to move their arms and hands, however. In addition to causing a loss of sensation and control in the limbs, paraplegia may also cause difficulty breathing and controlling bodily functions.
A paraplegic may experience any of the following symptoms, in varying degrees depending on the severity of the injury:
- Sensory loss in the affected areas
- Loss of motor function in affected areas
- Difficulty breathing
- Loss of bladder and bowel control
Treatment may include surgery or bed rest, depending on the extent of injury. If the spinal cord is severely damaged, however, there may be no way of fully repairing the nerves and treatment will instead focus on assisting the victim in coping with his or her condition, as well as working to keep any further complications or illnesses at bay.
