Victor Cardenas Killed in Fresno Crash on Shields Avenue

Fresno, California (February 10, 2023) – Victor Cardenas, 29, of Fresno, was killed in a crash involving a chase suspect in Fresno on Wednesday night, according to the Fresno County Coroner’s Office.

The incident took place at Shields Avenue and Fresno Street just after 11 p.m. February 8.

Police reportedly pulled over a driver for non-moving traffic violations in the area of Shields Avenue and First Street. While police spoke to the occupants of the SUV, the driver suddenly accelerated away from the area and the police began to pursue the suspect.

Police stopped the pursuit due to the suspect’s speed and the suspect soon after collided with another vehicle after running a red light at the intersection of Shields Avenue and Fresno Street.

Cardenas was the driver of the other vehicle and was killed in the crash.

The suspect, identified as Andrew Calderon, 40, was hospitalized with critical injuries. He is expected to be booked into Fresno County Jail for multiple charges including DUI causing death, vehicular manslaughter, and evasion causing death.

The two passengers in the suspect’s vehicle declined medical attention.

Authorities are investigating the incident.
