Pedestrian Accidents in Oregon
Pedestrian fatalities remain a significant roadway concern in Oregon. According to the Oregon Department of Transportation, pedestrian deaths have risen in recent years, reflecting a statewide trend of increasing traffic fatalities. In 2023, Oregon recorded over 130 pedestrian fatalities, marking one of the highest counts in decades.
Nationally, pedestrian deaths have surged as well. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that more than 7,300 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in 2022, one of the highest totals recorded since 1981. Safety officials attribute the increase to factors such as impaired driving, larger vehicles, and reduced visibility during early morning hours.
