2 Injured, 1 Seriously in Corning School Bus Crash

Tehama County, California (May 13, 2022) – Two people were injured, one of them seriously, when an Orland Unified School District bus collided with a car Thursday afternoon at an intersection near Corning in Tehama County.

There were about 26 students on board the bus at the time of the accident but no one was hospitalized.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at about 1:46 p.m. at South Avenue and Kirkwood Road.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the bus was heading east on South Avenue, approaching Kirkwood Road ahead of a Honda driven by 19-year-old Tyler Mitchell. The bus stopped at the railroad tracks before Kirkwood, and the Honda stopped and waited behind the bus.

The bus then continued and made a left turn onto Kirkwood. Authorities said Mitchell quickly approached and drove into the westbound lane of South Avenue, causing the Honda to hit the rear of the bus.

Mitchell sustained a broken leg. He was taken to the hospital for treatment. His passenger, 21-year-old Angelica Castillo was also hospitalized with minor injuries.

CHP said there were 26 students on the bus. Seven of them were evaluated but no student was hospitalized.

The students were taken back to Orland High School.

An investigation is ongoing.
