Lisa Johnson and Ryan Mercer Killed in Malheur County Car Accident on US Highway 95

Malheur County, Oregon (May 23, 2023) – Two people were killed in a multi-vehicle collision on Sunday morning in Malheur County.
At around 11:14 a.m., the Oregon State Patrol responded to the scene of a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 95 near milepost 25.
Authorities say a 2017 Ford Explorer driven by 38-year-old Ryan Michael Mercer of Missouri was driving a car northbound in the southbound lane when an oncoming 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 73-year-old Walter Robert Gilmore of Idaho swerved to avoid a collision but crashed into a fog marker.
The Ford Explorer then collided head-on with a 2022 Ford Edge driven by 37-year-old Joseph J Luia of Nevada.
The impact of the collision caused the Ford Explorer to roll over onto its roof.
Mercer and 58-year-old Lisa K. Johnson of Nevada who was a passenger in the Ford Edge were pronounced dead at the accident scene.
Luia and his passenger, 33-year-old Alexander E. Murillo of Nevada, were transported to the hospital in critical condition.
Gilmore and his passenger, 72-year-old Diana Lynn Bonsey-Gilmore, were unhurt.
Additional information about the accident was not released.
An investigation into the accident is underway.
